Søren Saxmose Nielsen
Professor
Søren S. Nielsen was trained in veterinary medicine with a degree from The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL), Denmark, in 1998. Four years later, he earned his PhD based on studies relating to interpretation of diagnostic test information for bovine paratuberculosis. He gained the DVSc title based on studies used for design of the Danish control programme on paratuberculosis at University of Copenhagen in 2009.
He is currently employed as Professor in Disease and Diagnostic Modelling at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he teaches epidemiology and performs research primarily focused on infectious diseases of production animals. This research has included a variety of project management tasks. He has worked primarily with issues on diagnosis, control and epidemiology of paratuberculosis. He designed the Danish control programme on paratuberculosis, which was successfully implemented in 2006. He has also published > 170 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals, along with more than 80 professional papers and numerous conference contributions. He currently serves as Chair of the Animal Health and Welfare Panel and as a member of the Scientific Committee in the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the results of those efforts are published in 130+ international reports including guidance on methodology and development of legislation in the European Union.
Possible conflicts of interest
Søren S. Nielsen collaborates with the Danish stakeholders in animal production, the pharmaceutical industry and animal welfare NGOs. The collaborations on occasion include direct collaboration in the veterinary consultancy unit or in research projects. Furthermore, the collaboration includes contact via the advisory committees, where the collaborators are members. Søren S. Nielsen acts in his function as employee at University of Copenhagen in these relations. He does not receive any renumeration from the collaborators.
He also serves as a Chair of the Panel on Animal Health and Welfare and the Scientific Committee in the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), along with ad hoc working groups within EFSA. He receives a salary for these services according to EFSA’s Expert’s Compensation Guide. Declarations of Interest are made to, and approved by, the EFSA Management Board in that regard.
