Policy Coherence for Corporate Sustainability in the EU: Can We Achieve Sustainable Corporate Governance Without Sustainable Finance?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

The discussions in corporate sustainability and its financing have primarily focused on one of the two fields exclusively, disregarding any consideration for legislative policy coherence. Given the opportunity represented by the European Union revision of corporate sustainability reporting, and in the light of the recent Glasgow Climate Pact, which has committed to double adaptation finance and requested countries to present more ambitious climate pledges next year, the present chapter addresses the need for further cohesion assuring policy coherence in sustainable governance and sustainable finance. Building on the renewed legislative impetus at the European Union level in the two respective fields and the challenge of providing finance for climate mitigation and adaptation at the United Nations level, the chapter highlights the areas for amelioration. Furthermore, this chapter opens the door for further scholarly and legislative advancement in the light of the climate emergency, noting the most important sectors for taking sector-specific actions. Finally, this chapter recognises the preeminent goal that the European Union has not yet fully developed and concludes by reflecting on how these impetuses can further the Capital Market Union.
