The ALTIBRAIN study investigates a novel model linking altitude-like oxygen manipulation, endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) in the brain, neuroplasticity, and cognition. The main purpose of the study is to determine whether upregulation of endogenous brain EPO by altitude-like hypoxia cognition training is a fundamental mechanism of enduring neuroplasticity and cognitive improvement.
The results will have direct influence on our understanding of neuroplasticity and regenerative processes in the brain, which can be used to unlock novel treatment strategies targeting cognitive decline across neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder.
