Primary fields of research
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) among young individuals is often attributed to mutations that cause cardiomyopathy or ion channel disease. In many cases, it is difficult to determine the ultimate cause of death at the autopsy since these primary heart diseases does not necessarily cause visible changes of the hearts. Genetic tests can be used in the investigation of the cause of death as well as for risk stratification and counselling of the surviving family members. However, the tests are currently insufficient in many cases due to lacking understanding of variant effects. An improved knowledge of single variants, variant combinations and other factors is necessary in order to obtain the full potential of genetic tests.
Current research
- Investigation of SCD in young individuals
- Investigation of epigenetic patterns of the heart
