Primary fields of research

My main research interest is the application of advanced analytical chemistry for the investigation of fate, biotransformation and cytotoxicity of metal-based drugs (e.g. cisplatin, oxaliplatin or new drug candidates) in biological systems, and development of novel drug delivery vehicles e.g. nanoparticles and metallacages. The research furthermore involves application of in vitro cancer cell systems as model systems. In terms of instrumentation this entails application of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS also SP-ICPMS) often coupled to separation techniques such as Capillary Electrophoresis (CE), Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) or High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Other research interests are the application of ICPMS/ICPOES based instrumentation for determination of trace elements in drugs in the Pharmaceutical industry and the compliance of the techniques with current pharmacopeia requirements.

Current research

Reactivity and Fate of Molybdenum Compounds. Development of analytical protocols to determine Mo content in cellular samples following treatment with Mo-compounds which are a potential treatment for cyanide poisoning. Collaboration with Sigridur Suman, University of Iceland, and Ian H. Lambert, University of Copenhagen, department of biology.

Intracellular distribution of platinum following administration of cisplatin/oxaliplatin. Development of protocols for precise and accurate determination of platinum in cytosol, nucleus and mitochondria by ICPMS. Collaboration with Ian H. Lambert, Science, University of Copenhagen

Cellular uptake and stability of Metallacages. Development of analytical protocols to estimate uptake and stability of Pd2L4 metallacages in cells and tissue. Collaboration with Prof. Angela Casini, Technical University of Munich, Germany
