Molecular microbial ecology, exchange of genetic material between bacteria, evolution of microbial communities, bacterial turnover of dissolved carbon and nitrogen in coastal and oceanic waters, regulation of bacterial growth efficiency, bacterial viruses, functional diversity of microbial communities in water, soil, ice and snow, occurrence and function of bacterial virulence factors in the outer (non-host) environment, role of bacteria in the global mercury cycle.
