Emilie Hestbaek is a psychologist and a PhD fellow at the Department of Psychology. Her research primarily focuses on the intergenerational transmission of adversity and mental disorders from parents to their offspring, as well as interventions preventing this. She employs a diverse range of research methods, including observations, experiments, clinical interviews, and surveys. In her role as a clinical psychologist at the
Mental Health Services in the Capital Region, she specializes in working with adult patients who have personality disorders and trauma.

In her PhD, Hestbaek will together with Senior Researcher Sebastian Simonsen conduct a large randomised controlled trial of the effects of a preventive intervention for parents with mental disorders. The project is innovative in that the interventions is delivered as a supplements to the parents’ ongoing psychiatric treatment and is transdiagnostic, that is, target parents with various mental disorders. If proven effective, the interventions has the potential for widespread implementation across Denmark and other countries, addressing the existing gap in support services for parents with mental disorders. The project is supervised by professor Mette Væver, associate professor at University College London Michelle Sleed, and Senior Researcher Sebastian Simonsen. The trial is funded by the Independent Danish Research Fund and TrygFonden.
