As part of the project SoMeFamily I study which functions social media serve in families. With a point of departure in linguistic ethnography and online ethnography I investigate how social relations are negotiated in both on- and offline interactions within the family and I uncover the intersection of parents’ and adolescents’ online networks.
In my PhD dissertation "Culture as idea and practice in youth and family life", I investigated the linguistic and cultural practices among adolescents with ethnic minority backgrounds when they interact with peers and teachers at school, with parents and siblings at home, and with peers on social media sites. The dissertation looks into their local language practices while simultaneously relating the practices to broader societal discourses to see if and how the adolescents and their families respond to them.
