The mission of my research is to understand the origins of asthma, eczema and allergy and to translate this into clinical practice to improve disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. For this, I have built the clinical research unit and mother-child cohorts Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC), combining deep clinical phenotyping with advanced molecular technologies. Breakthroughs such as the role of the human microbiome in the origins of asthma and allergy, and the unraveling of novel risk genes in inflammatory diseases have improved our understanding of the processes leading towards health and disease in the interaction between heredity and environment.
Importantly, we believe asthma, eczema and allergy are early indicators of a range of non-communicable diseases, which have increased in parallel during the recent half century. Therefore, our research has expanded to other disorders including disturbances of growth, cognitive and motor development, and immune maturation.
