N2 - The Moravian brother Michael Cröger (1714–1800) was chosen by the lot to replacethe diarist of the Single Brethren Choir in Copenhagen. This paper is a small casestudy examining how, in the diary, Michael Cröger presents a frequent use ofwatchwords to the Moravian Society in Copenhagen – a practice closely linked tothe devotional practice of self-examination.Through the practice of watchwords andself-examination, Michael Cröger introduced a more individualized Christianityand an extension of lay authority, which became an innovative factor beyond theMoravian congregation in Copenhagen and contributed to the religious awakeningmovements of the 19th century in Denmark
