Research: brief description
Jytte Bang is an associate professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Copenhagen. In her research, she primarily focuses on the interrelated areas of developmental psychology and developmental science. She carries out qualitative research with children in their everyday environments and analyzes the data with the aim to both contribute with new knowledge about children’s lives and their development (developmental psychology) and with new knowledge about developmental processes in theoretical terms (developmental science). An important part of this research she has done in collaboration with close colleagues at the Department of Psychology. Inspired by Roger Barker’s work, she has carried out all-day observations (7am-7pm) of children during a period of four months. The aim of the study is to model ‘variability of development’, that is, to investigate how the variabilities and complexities of children’s personal lives may influence their learning and development. In her theoretical work, Jytte Bang is especially occupied with the theoretical modelling of a ‘whole person’ perspective on development drawing on ecological psychology, cultural-historical theory, and existential phenomenology. As a part of her theoretical contributions to developmental science, she contributes to the ongoing discussion in the history of psychology of the issue of dualism; especially, she is occupied with the question of how to theorize the transactional character of the individual-environment relationship from a developmental perspective. Currently, Jytte Bang has studied the production and reproduction of standards in children’s and adolescents’ lives with a focus on schooling. This work is carried out in collaboration with Ph.D. Sofie Pedersen; this research has been carried out as part of the research project SUBSTANCE, which received financial support by the National Research Council. Jytte Bang is also interested in the role of music and musical instruments for children’s lives and their development. She has published articles on what does the availability of relevant music technologies mean for children’s musical play activities; and on what is the role of learning to play classical music with regard to children’s learning and development in current society. Finally, she holds an interest in understanding the role of the built environment for human development. As a part if this research focuses, she is initiating the research group InterSpace at the Department of Psychology.
