In recent years, Gary Shaffer has built his research around simplified but comprehensive Earth System models, in particular the Danish Center for Earth System (DCESS) model. With these tools he carries out long-term projections of future climate and environmental conditions like ocean oxygen levels and sea level rise. He also applies these models in combination with data-based reconstructions to better understand carbon cycling and climate change for important specific epochs in Earth history like major life extinction events.
