Anne Ring Petersen - Speaker

Art Institutional Policies in the Nordic Region: National, Multicultural, or Intercultural? The paper attempted to shed light on the conference’s regional issue, the position of interculturalism in relation to art institutions of the Nordic region, by broadening the perspective to the international context and the art institutional policies of the last three decades. It considered the connections between the critical discourse on cultural identity, the globalisation of the art world and the adoption of multicultural policies by Western art institutions. It was argued that discussions from the last two decades have not only made it clear that institutional multiculturalism is not the answer to the problem of attaining 'true' recognition of migrant and non-Western artists, but also revealed that the critical discourse on identity politics has not been able to come up with solutions, either. Could we get beyond the present deadlock of institutional nationalism as well as that of institutional multiculturalism by exploring the dialogic potential of interculturalism?
