Forgetful or Reluctant? Evidence on Reminder Response and Donor Behavior from Panel Data

This chapter provides further evidence on the potential two-sided effects of reminders and explores whether reminders impact generosity and hence the intent to give. We use panel data from a large US charitable institution and observe roughly 444,800 yearly membership and gift transactions made by the full sample of 113,652 membership program members over the 4 years from 2011 to 2014. The charity sends multiple reminders to members around the time that their annual memberships expire, and members may receive up to eight rounds of reminders to renew their membership.
