N2 - Air pollution can damage heritage collections. This study examines the air quality performancein one store with mechanical ventilation andin another with semi-passive climate control.Air pollution was measured with passive diffusionsamplers during summer and winter. Theatmospheric corrosivity was determined gravimetricallyusing copper, zinc and lead coupons, and by a real-time electrical resistance monitorover one year. The concentration of outdoorgeneratedair pollution was low within bothstores. The emission of formic acid and aceticacid from internal sources led to higher indoorconcentrations. The total acid concentrationwas 15 μg m-3 in the store with mechanical ventilationand 97 μg m-3 in the store with semipassiveclimate control. The indoor atmosphericcorrosivity was determined as very low by bothmethods. The study demonstrated that storesusing mechanical ventilation with air filtrationand semi-passive climate control provide acceptableair quality for the preservation of heritagecollections.
