Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology

I head the Particle Theory Group in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford, where I have been a staff member since 1990. I was a frequent visitor to NORDITA while it was based at NBI and since 2010 I am a Scientific Associate of the NBI Discovery Center.
My research is focussed at the interface between fundamental physics and astrophysics & cosmology - both theoretical and experimental. Having developed close links with the Niels Bohr International Academy, I had the opportunity to build up an Astroparticle Physics Group here. This was made possible by an award by the Danish National Research Foundation of a Niels Bohr Professorship 2013-18, during which I spent half my time in Copenhagen.
Primary fields of research
My research interests include dark matter, inflation and large-scale structure formation, the cosmology of neutrinos and other relic particles, primordial nucleosynthesis, cosmic microwave background etc. I also work on high energy cosmic rays, neutrinos and gamma-rays and participate in relevant experiments - the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole and the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array in Chile and Spain. NBI became a full member of the IceCube Collaboration in 2013 just before its breakthrough discovery of cosmic high energy neutrinos that have opened a new window on to the universe. The IceCube group is studying the fundamental properties of neutrinos through sensitive measurements of neutrino oscillations, as well as searching for neutrino signals of dark matter. I also collaborate with researchers in the CMB group who are working on ESA's Planck satellite mission as well the forthcoming DeepSpace telescope in Greenland.
