My phD project is called Going nowhere, slow - scenes of depression in contemporary literature and culture. Among other things it analyzes books by David Foster Wallace and Michel Houellebecq, the movie Melancholia by Lars von Trier, and works by the readymade artist Claire Fontaine. Like almost all my previous research this project is squarely placed at the intersection between art and politics. Thus I am not just interested in, on the one hand, depression as an individual and psychological phenomenon, and, on the other, in cultural representations of depression. It is rather a question of examining depression in a more social and political context and as it (depression) emerges as an aesthetic experience that is not only represented but also problematized in the various works that I deal with. That leads to the hypothesis that the concept and figure of depression allows not just me as a literary and cultural scholar but also the writers and artists in question to expose a series of pertinent political problems in the contemporary and late capitalist world. Problems concerning the relation between futurity and fiction or fabulation in particular. In this regard I want to argue that depression can be understood as a collapse (in the imagination) of future - and where does that leave depressive art and the function of fiction?
