Thyroid Function and Depression

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

Depression is a mood disorder manifested by among other symptoms dysphoria, and loss of interest and energy. Its course can, to a certain degree, be affected by physiological or pathological alterations of the hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid axis that lead to a “brain hypothyroidism,” as some authors have suggested. Thus, thyroid hormones have been proposed as adjuvant to antidepressant medications.
