"1807 in Britain" is an analysis of British reactions to the bombardement of Copenhagen in 1807. The episode has largely been forgotten in Britain, so there is no 'collective memory' to analyse. There was, however, lively debates in Parliament and among the cultural elite in 1808 about the morality and lawfulness of this violent action against a neutral state to secure its navy. Later on, military historians remembered the episode as the mother of preventive military actions to secure strategic needs, and before WWI German naval leaders were said to suffer from a 'Copenhagen Complex'. There are also examples of modern treatment of the event in popular historical fiction.
