The divine names Kúpris and Ĩris are originally individuazing i-stem derivatives built on adjectives in *-ro- to IE *keu̯p ‘to experience a strong feeling(/desire)’ and *u̯ei̯h1 ‘to be eager, strive’. Furthermore, Ĩris may be traced back to the same root as Vedic Vená- (“Seeker”), whose description in RV 10.123 matches that of the Greek goddess.
