I am a PhD Student at the Department of Sociology. The theme of my dissertation (01/02/2020-31/01/2023) is welfare solidarity. Particularly, I investigate possible explanations for why an increasing number of European citizens think that welfare services should be restricted to ‘our own’ (i.e., welfare chauvinism). For this purpose, I use state-of-the art quantitative methods to analyze various data sources (e.g. experimental data, survey data, register data).
Among others I seek to answer the following questions:
- Can we detect welfare chauvinism against recent immigrants and Muslims, when investigating the cases of hospital treatment and vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic?
- Do deservingness criteria in evaluations of welfare beneficiaries or hospital patients work independently of each other or do they reinforce each other?
- Do sudden increases in refugee influxes within a nation prompt an (average) increase in individual-level welfare chauvinism?
Merlin Schaeffer supervises the project.
I am a member of the research group welfare, inequality and mobility.
