BA and MA in Danish and Comparative literature from the University of Copenhagen, 1973. Ph.d. in Scandinavian literature, 1978. 1977-1988 assistant and associate professor at the Department of Scandinavian Languages and Literature, University of Copenhagen. Fullbright Lecturer at the University of California Los Angeles, 1986, Docent (1988-1996) at the department of Film and Media Studies, University of Copenhagen, research professor (1996-1999). 2000-2016 Professor at the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, Section for Film, Media and Communication, University of Copenhagen.Professor emeritus (2016-)

Head of the Department of Film and Media studies (1990-1994 and 2001-2002). Member of The Danish Research Council for the Humanities (1991-1997), 1994-1996 Chairman of the Danish Research Council of the Humanities and The Committee of Heads of Danish Research Councils. Member of Core Group of European Heads of Research Councils (1994-1996). Member of ESF's Standing Committee for the Humanities and its Core Group, 1994-1997. Chairman of the board of The Danish Film Institute (1997-2000). Convenor of the IAMCR-working group on Mass Media & Popular Fiction (1988-1999.

On the the editorial board of SMID's journal Mediekultur (1989-1993), Editor in chief of Northern Light. Film and Media Studies Yearbook.  On the advisory board Stduies in Documentary film (2007-), associate editor of Palgrave Communication (2013-), co-editor of the book series Palgrave European Film and Media Studies (2013-).


Co-director of the research projects Changing Media-Changing Europe (2000-2005, with professor Peter Golding, UK), Media and Democracy in the Network Society ( 2002-2004), Media Democracy and European Culture (2006-2009) and Mediating Cultural Encounters Through European Screens (MeCETES, 2013-2016  www.mecetes.co.uk)
