My PhD project revolves around the legal challenges arising in the wake of unmanned vessels. More specifically, I will look into the legal issues arising from a private law perspective, with a particular focus on issues arising in tort, contract and under marine insurance law.
The main argument of my PhD project is that the introduction of autonomous ships at sea will entail a paradigm shift in which the shipowners’ scope of liability will decrease with more marine casualties resulting from faulty artificial intelligence (“AI”) systems installed on the ships. Hence, it can be expected that the launch of autonomous ships will cause an increase in product liability claims towards the manufacturers of AI systems. This shift in liability allocation creates a demand for research into how this will challenge the applicability and efficiency of the current legal framework.
