In my PhD project "The Museum and Its Discontents – Discomfort and Discomforting Histories in the Art Museum", I look at curatorial and aesthetic practices in the intersection of art museums and colonialism. Whereas colonial history is often present in the context of ethnographic and historical museums, the intersection of colonialism and art museums is something that still needs to be further explored. Especially the way in which external curators and artists are “invited” to do the difficult work of dealing with colonial history – and how this work appears in the museum space – is something that needs attention.
Keywords: museums, affect theory, postcolonial theory and decolonization, art history, modern and contemporary art, institutional critique.
I am based at SMK - The National Gallery of Denmark.
