Matthijs Michiel Maas

Matthijs is a Junior Associate at the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute (GCRI), and guest editor for the Informatica Special Issue on Superintelligence. He is also a researcher and coordinator with the Global Politics of Artificial Intelligence research group at Yale University & the University of Oxford (see reading guide). He has previously published on trends in military applications of AI systems; and lessons from nuclear non-proliferation regimes for promises and pitfalls of regulation for emerging technologies.
Matthijs holds an M.Sc. in International Relations (Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh, and a B.A. in Liberal Arts & Sciences (Cum Laude) from University College Utrecht in The Netherlands. Following his graduation, Matthijs pursued an interdisciplinary career path, working as assistant strategic analyst at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies; as diplomatic trainee at The Netherlands Embassy in Beirut (Lebanon); as an technology-enabled solutions analyst at NewForesight Consultancy (The Netherlands), and as itinerant web developer at the Le Wagon coding bootcamp, amongst others.
